Amphipolis Apiculture

Amphipolis is located at the foot of Mount Pangaion. This rich area was known since antiquity for the variety of its vegetation. Mount Pangaion, rich in fauna and flora, but also in mining wealth (gold and silver), has reasonably been the apple of discord among many rivals. Due to this abundance of flora, important for man's survival, it was at times given different names. According to Greek mythology, the original name was Karmanion, while it was later named Pangaion after Paggeos, the son of Mars and Kritovouli. At its top the Satrae built the oracle of Dionysus, which was considered comparable to the oracle of Delphi. The legendary musician Orpheus also taught and lived there along with his wife Eurydice.
Amphipolis was an ancient city built in eastern Macedonia, on the banks of river Strymonas, at the same location where another city formerly existed, known as "Nine Streets". It was founded by the Athenians in 437 BC in order to control the rich in raw materials region. Later, in 358 BC, it was conquered by Philip II of Macedon and became a base for the expedition of Alexander the Great into Asia. Today it is famous for the Lion of Amphipolis, located next to the old bridge over the Strymonas, and for the KastaTomb. The area is directly connected with Alexander the Great. After his death and until the end of the 4th century, important historical events took place in the area of Amphipolis. Major generals and admirals of Alexander the Great are connected to this locality. Here in 311 BC Kassandros banishes and kills Alexander the Great's lawful wife Roxanne and their son Alexander.
